GRAMMAR TIP- 

USES OF HAS BEEN, HAVE BEEN, HAD BEEN 

-We use 'have been' with - I, you, we, they, plural nouns 

Like- I have been..., They have been..... 

- We use 'has been' with - He, she, it, singular nouns, Uncountable nouns 

- we use 'had been' for the past in case of all subjects. 


USES 

  • Travel experience
  • Actions and situations started and are still continuing
  • Passive voice 
TRAVEL EXPERIENCE-

Example- We have been to Goa many times.

(means we have visited Goa many times.) 

NOTE- We cannot talk about specific times 

i.e., I have been to Goa last year. - This is wrong. 

** We can use 'had been' when talking about 2 events in the past.

Example- When I visited Surat last year I had never been to Gujarat before. 


ACTIONS OR SITUATIONS STARTED AND ARE STILL CONTINUING

Example- I have been studying English for 5 years. OR 

I have been studying English since 2016.

** When we use 'for' we are talking about the duration or the amount of time.

When we use since we are talking about the starting point .   2016 was my starting point of studying English.

-*Only use 'had been' if there were two actions in the past. One is continuous action and one single finished action. 

Example- I had been studying English for 3 years when I left the school. (means in the present I stopped studying English)


USE IN PASSIVE VOICE 

We use have been, has been, had been in passive voice sentences.

When we order something on Zomato, we get a notification that 'Your order has been accepted' this Sentence is in passive voice where importance is given to your order.

Active voice of the above Sentence is -

The restaurant has accepted your order.

HOW DO WE USE 'HAD BEEN' in the passive voice?

We only use it if there were two actions in the past.

Example- The marketing campaign had just been launched when the agency shut down.

Here first action is launch of marketing campaign then after that agency shut down.
